The issue, to some extent, had derailed the presidential bid of the former Vice President, and he would ultimately go on to lose the election to the incumbent President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari. However, over two years from the debacle of the 2019 scenario, there could be a repeat of the issue as 2023 approaches.

This is because 2023 would represent another politicking and electioneering year, the height of which would be the presidential election, as the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari draws the curtain on his second term tenure. There have been rumours that once again, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar could be eyeing the seat that would be vacated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, if this happens to be the case, will the 2019 scenario not repeat itself and throw a spanner into the electoral works of the former Vice President? It remains to be seen if this would happen or if it would have any effect on his rumoured 2023 presidential bid but, it could nevertheless, prove to be another major issue that could be used by his political foes and detractors to discredit him.

Politics is a game that can be unforgiving many times and the narrative that Atiku Abubakar is not a native of Nigeria may be used to devastating effects by his opponents, to derail his ambition, even before he announces it. Apart from using the issue of his root to discredit him directly in front of the electorates, he may also be forced into litigations challenging his eligibility.

All these present a huge threat to the rumoured presidential ambition of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and unless he can quickly navigate the perilous political water that could be waiting for him if he eventually decides to contest for the Presidency in 2023 and quickly put the issue of his root-induced eligibility behind him, then his rumoured presidential ambition may be dead even before it begins.
