Chelsea confirmed the signing of Barcelona forward, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a deal worth £10 million, plus a free transfer for left back Marcos Alonso. This happened on the late deadline day. The move marks a return to England for Aubameyang, who only joined the Catalan side in February on a free after his exit from Arsenal, and will see him reunite with former boss Thomas Tuchel....CONTINUE READING
However, tongues are wagging already because Auba has taken the allegedly ‘cursed’ No 9 shirt at Chelsea.
The number nine was vacated by Romelu Lukaku after his return to Inter Milan in June, and there is a long history of Chelsea strikers struggling in that shirt. The 72-cap Gabon international wore jersey No. 17 at Barcelona and No. 14 at Arsenal, but wore the number nine for part of his time at Saint-Etienne and with Dijon in France. Lukaku, signed in August 2021 for £97.5million, only scored eight Premier League goals in a disappointing season.
Following the manner in which some players that had wore jersey number 9 in Chelsea seemingly struggled, some believe that Aubameyang may be a victim.
Some fans consistently argued that picked jersey number 9 is one mistake Aubameyang has made in his entire career. Number 9 jersey in Chelsea is jinxed. Right from the time of Hernan Crespo till date, no one has ever used that number and did well in Chelsea.
For me, nine is just a number like any other digit. It has no spiritual implications of either blessings or cursing. It’s about the teams playing style and the ability of the player wearing number 9 to adapt. Alvaro Morata, Fernando Torres and Radamel Falcao are among the high-profile forwards that wore No 9 at Chelsea.
I don’t really think that number is cursed. Alvaro Morata wore it, and to me, Morata wasn’t a flop at Chelsea. He scored 24 goals in 72 appearances, averaging one goal in three appearances, which is a fair figure.Tammy Abraham also wore it and I think he did well, just that Tuchel didn’t like him.
Most Importantly, don’t believe in superstition. I’m rather pragmatic. Cursed or not cursed, Aubameyang is big enough to deal with every situation associated with a mere print on the back of a shirt.
The premier league was simply tough for some players that had wore the jersey at Chelsea. Perhaps, the Chelsea pressure symptom affected them, hence they all flopped.
There is no such thing as no. 9 curse anywhere. I don’t believe in that. Give Haland Ronaldo or Zlatan Ibrahimovic that no. 9, they will surely fist on goals.
