Darwin Nunez and Aurelien Tchouameni moved to Liverpool and Real Madrid in deals that could reach €100 million. Antony, who was eventually bought from Ajax by Manchester United, joined this exclusive club on deadline day.

The Premier League spent more money on transfers than in any other window so far.

Despite the financial uncertainty facing many clubs in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and its long-term consequences, there are few signs that spending at the top level will slow, and English clubs are leading the way.

The 2022 summer transfer window: who spent the most on players?

As expected, the Premier League dominates the top ten clubs that spent the most money in the 2022 summer transfer window.

Chelsea are in first place after a busy transfer summer under new owner and sporting director Todd Boehly. They signed players like Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly, then closed the window with a bang by bringing in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria.

Surprisingly, no club has spent more during a window than Chelsea this summer.

Manchester United are second in the rankings after bringing in Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro for high wages, but it’s the late arrival of Antonio that has seen them climb quite high in a remarkable deal that could reach €100 million. Tyrell Malacia also joined for a hefty sum, while Christian Eriksen was a free transfer.

West Ham United ended the summer with the third biggest spending spree in the World Football League, and their key arrival was Lucas Paqueta. Tottenham and Nottingham Forest, who have signed a staggering number of new players, complete the top five, which is a monopoly for Premier League clubs.

Arsenal and Newcastle have fallen out of the top ten, while Manchester City and Wolves are still there.

There are only three non-Premier League clubs on the list: Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich.

The most controversial club on this list is Barcelona. The Camp Nou club, which has a growing debt that can only be dealt with by selling assets, spent more than €153 million on new players this summer, despite getting barely anything in return. They signed players like Robert Lewandowksi, Raphinha, Jules Kounde and others.

While Barcelona is the second biggest spender in the world, El Clasico rivals Real Madrid are in 20th place, with only Aurelien Tchouameni joining the club for a fee.

Bayern Munich spent the ninth most this summer, €117.5 million, which includes the signings of Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax, Sadio Mane from Liverpool and Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus.
