The Old Trafford side’s recent signing is a compatriot of the Spurs centre-back. And the two 24-year-olds have played together for the Argentina national team.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Romero named Martinez alongside Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk as two of the finest operators in the backline in English football’s first tier.
“Today, the best defender for me is Virgil van Dijk, always, and Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United.
“For me, they are the best in the Premier League.”
The Argentine was brought by United from Ajax. At the Amsterdam-based club, the 24-year-old had spent three fruitful seasons under head coach Erik ten Hag. And the two have reunited in Manchester.
Martinez has seemingly been trusted by the gaffer. The Argentine is one of the first names on the team sheet for the Red Devils. And the 24-year-old has repaid the favour with his impressive displays.
Martinez and Varane have been solid for United
After a shaky start to the 2022/23 campaign, Martinez came into the firing line of critics. United lost against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford in the first two competitive fixtures of Ten Hag’s ring.
Fans have also had doubts about the Argentine coping with the physicality in England. However, the 24-year-old has proven people wrong with his recent performances.
After Brentford beat us 4-0, the gaffer made a few big changes to the team. Harry Maguire was dropped to the bench and replaced by Raphael Varane against Liverpool.
Since then, the Red Devils have not looked back. We have won four games on the trot in the PL with the French and Argentine centre-backs in the lineup. The only fixture we have lost in between was against Real Sociedad, in which Martinez and Varane were benched.
