Here is how Carlo Ancelotti could fit him into his lineup.
Option 1: left-back
Real Madrid may consider offloading Ferland Mendy next summer, so Joao Cancelo could be his direct replacement.
The Portuguese has provided an impressive 14 assists in his 70 career appearances at left-back.
Option 2: right-back
Courtois; Cancelo, Militao, Rudiger, Alaba; Valverde, Tchouameni, Modric; Rodrygo, Benzema, Vinicius Jr.
Joao Cancelo’s natural position is on the right, so he could compete for the starter spot with Dani Carvajal who is sometimes too inconsistent.
In fact, the Portuguese could cover the whole wing so that a player like Rodrygo would focus on his attacking duties.
Option 3: complete right wing-back
Courtois; Militao, Alaba, Rudiger; Cancelo, Tchouameni, Camavinga, Mendy; Valverde/Rodrygo, Benzema, Vinicius Jr.
Finally, Joao Cancelo can be used as a complete wing-back who would mainly focus on running forward and creating chances.
This would allow Ancelotti to have all of his best centre-backs in the starting lineup and make his midfield even more dynamic.
