According to This Day newspaper, the party has fixed February 19 as the tentative date for its National Convention. It has also zoned the position of the National Chairman to the North.
However, there is a challenge which the ruling party will face ahead of its National Convention and that will be the basis of our discussion in this article.
Reconciling All Aggrieved Members In Different State Chapters
Many state chapters of the APC are in factions. Some aggrieved members who are not happy with the leadership style of Mai Mala Buni are in court to challenge the legitimacy of his position as the caretaker chairman of the party.
In states like Zamfara, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Ogun, the party is in factions. Recently a faction of Lagos APC led by Jandor dumped the party for PDP after attempts to reconcile them failed.
The crisis in Zamfara APC is serious as Former Governor Abdulaziz Yari, Senator Kabiru Marafa and Governor Matawalle have refused to agree on how the structure of the party should be shared in the state.
In Imo State, the faction loyal to Rochas Okorocha is in a supremacy battle with Governor Hope Uzodinma.
The story is not different in Ogun where Former Governor Ibikunle Amosun and Governor Dapo Abiodun have different factions loyal to them.
The APC is saddled with a tough challenge which is to ensure that all issues in these state chapters are resolved before February when its National Convention will take place. Otherwise, the opposition PDP may reap from it.
As it stands now, 11 chairmanship aspirants are in the race to emerge as the next National Chairman of the APC and we watch to see how events will play out from now till February 2022.
