Yakubu Gowon:
Yakubu Gowon, the former President of Nigeria who reigned from 1966 to 1975, claimed to be the person who released Awolowo from prison, and he also gave a tangible reason why he did that.

The former Governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria also claimed to be the one that released Obafemi Awolowo.
During his interview with him, he claimed that he was the only person that had the power to release Awolowo at that time because he was locked up in the prison that was located in the Eastern region, which he was ruling at that time.
He claimed that Gowon didn’t have a hand in how Awolowo was freed because Calabar was part of the Eastern region at that time.
