The three-day extravaganza is set to begin Thursday and end on Saturday. The event, which will be held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground, will showcase the city’s rich heritage.

It will be centered around Lake Victoria. Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o said the fiesta is a testament to the county’s collective commitment to environmental stewardship, cultural preservation and economic empowerment.

Nyong’o said during the Fiesta, they we will engage in thought-provoking plenary discussions that explore fish value chain, tourism and economic development.

“From production to processing, to marketing and finally to consumption, every aspect of the fish value chain plays a vital role in tourism development. They also assist in sustaining livelihoods and driving economic growth.”

Nyong’o’s speech was read on his behalf by Tourism and Trade executive Faridah Salim.

The event will also showcase the rich diversity of aquatic life in Lake Victoria and the ingenuity of fishermen and women.

There will be cultural entertainments showcasing vibrant rhythms, melodies and dances. Adrenaline-pumping traditional boat race, crowning of Mr and Miss Tourism, Mr and Miss Flex and Mr and Miss Strong will also take place.

The Luo traditional wrestling championships will showcase the strength, skill and spirit of sportsmanship that define the community.

“As we marvel at the exhibition of the legendary snake, Omieri, let us remember the ancient tales and wisdom it embodies, connecting us to our folklore and environmental heritage. Omieri reminds us of the delicate balance between humans and nature, urging us to be mindful stewards of our surroundings,” Nyong’o said.

He thanked organisers, sponsors, participants and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this Fiesta a reality.

He said their dedication and passion will shine in every aspect of this event. “Through the Grand Fish Fiesta, we aim to not only celebrate Lake Victoria and the fish value chain but also to promote sustainable tourism, economic empowerment and cultural exchange within our community and beyond,” Nyong’o said.
