Is there registration fee for SHIF?

Addressing the public on Friday, June 28, Nakhumicha assured Kenyans that the exercise will be free of charge.

Nakhumicha noted that community health promoters will be designated to assist Kenyans who visit NHIF offices for registration.

“As the government prepares for the transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHIF, we have set plans for registration of the new fund.

“I hereby announce the commencement of nationwide registration for SHIF on Monday, July 1, 2024. Kenyans are required to either self-register or visit the NHF offices or other registration points as the SHA board will designate, where the community health promoters will assist. The exercise will be free,” said Nakhumicha.

The CS urged all Kenyans to register immediately to avoid the last minute rush.

She assured those currently under the NHIF scheme that they will continue to receive services normally until the full transition to SHIF.

How to register for SHIF

According to the CS, SHIF can be self-registered using the USSD code *147# or visiting the SHA portal.

Upon dialling the code or accessing the registration portal, Kenyans will be required to present information such as Citizenship, National Identity (ID) number and phone number.

Others include address, declaration of dependents, birth certificate of children if any and ID of spouse, etc.

CS Nakhumicha explained that the digital nature of SHIF will curb many instances of corruption, which marred the operations of NHIF.

“We are integrating Information, Communication and Technology systems to enhance telemedicine and health management information systems for efficiency, accountability to address fraud and enable patient data portability,” she said.
