The man that has been arrested and linked with burning the Parliament is Zandile Christmas Mafe, who has been seen sleeping on the road numerous times. According to reports, Mafe is believed to have broken the Explosives Act and had owned explosives. As it was reported that he was allegedly found with explosives that were used to start the fire. Also, reports are stating that the 49-year-old has been found with stolen laptops, crockery and documents from the Parliament, which didn’t help his case at all. As that will be used as evidence to tie him down during his trial. By the looks of things, there will be more charges added to his case as more investigations are done. At the moment, he will be facing charges of a raft of charges, including charges relating to the Explosives Act, theft, arson and housebreaking. Mafe was currently based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, even though he’s originally from Mafikeng in North West.
Mafe’s legal representative, Luvuyo Godla, said his client will deny all the charges made against him as he felt that this was another injustice case. Godla stated that Mafe has been used as a scapegoat since the police officers have failed to find the real person behind the fire that burnt the Parliament. “Whether it’s in Khayelitsha or Constantia, arson is seen [everywhere]. Our submission is that this man is made a scapegoat of the failure of the executive of the legislature,” said Godla speaking to the media.
