After news circulated that 52 captives were released by the notorious bandit kingpin, Bello Turji, many people wanted to know more details and what would have made him to back down to the extent of agreeing to release them.

This is even more intriguing as reports about the release of the 52 victims did not add that they were released after ransoms were paid for them.

It means that they were released unconditionally. That is totally different from how armed bandits operate. They usually collect huge ransoms before releasing their captives or the victims may risks being killed especially if they are kidnapped by Turji’s camp.

However, fresh indication has made it known that Turji agreed to release the 52 captives as part of the backdoor talk between him and emissaries of the the Zamfara State government.

This means that the emissaries of the Zamfara State government led by Governor Bello Matawalle are making positive impact in the talk with the bandits group loyal to Turji.

This backdoor talk is a renewed efforts aimed at getting Turji and his men to give up banditry and embrace peace following his letter where he earlier indicated his readiness to do so.

In that later, Turji begged the federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Bello Matawalle and traditional authorities in Shinkafi area of Zamfara State to accept him and give him the chance to give up banditry and embrace peace.

The report cited above added that the 52 captives were released by Turji unconditionally as part of the moves for him to prove that he is really ready to give up banditry and embrace peace.

In fact, the captive have been driven away from the bandits den and they are to arrive at Gusau the state capital before they would be reunited by their various families.

It appear that the renewed backdoor talk with Turji and another loyalists of his identified as Dambokolo is yielding positive results so far.

However, the Zamfara State Government and other authorities have to be very careful in negotiating or trusting these bandits as their sincerity cannot be totally trusted.

There are instances in the past where some of them claimed to have repented, laid down their arms, received amnesty but they later reneged and went back fully into banditry.

When they do so, things would become worse because they would have obtained enough sensitive information within the period they pretended to have repented.

This is why the government and other authorities need to tread with utmost caution.
