Impotence is a very common condition that can affect men of any age. However, it is most common among older men.

According to the University of Wisconsin, approximately 5% of men over the age of 40 in the United States have complete erectile dysfunction (ED). Approximately 15% of men over the age of 70 have complete ED.

The most common causes

The ability of a man to achieve an erection is determined by several factors and can be caused by a variety of physical issues.

Mental health issues and other psychological issues can also cause or worsen ED.

1. Physical causes

Physical factors are the most common cause of erectile dysfunction. The following are the most common causes:

– Heart disease

– high cholesterol

– obstructed blood vessels

2. Psychological reasons

Impotence can also be caused by a variety of psychological factors. The following are the most common psychological reasons:

– stress

– depression

– anxiety

– Other mental health issues

– Relationship issues as a result of stress, poor communication

– communication issues or other concerns

Some men may have a combination of physical and psychological issues that can lead to or exacerbate ED. A physical injury, for example, which may slow a person’s sexual response, may cause anxiety about achieving an erection. According to the British National Health Service (NHS), some men may only experience ED in specific circumstances.

Treatments

To begin, a doctor will ensure that the individual is receiving the proper treatments for any other health conditions they may be suffering from. These conditions may be causing or exacerbating the ED, in which case they must be addressed.

The erectile dysfunction will then be treated directly by the doctor. There are several treatments available for impotence, but they differ depending on the cause of the impotence.

Oral medications

People suffering from erectile dysfunction can be prescribed several oral medications.

1. Alprostadil

If a person’s erectile dysfunction does not respond to treatment, alprostadil may be prescribed. This is a synthetic hormone that can aid in the stimulation of blood flow to the penis. The hormone can be injected directly into the penis or placed as a pellet in the urethra.

According to the NHS, a person who takes this hormone will typically have an erection within 5 to 15 minutes. The duration of the erection, on the other hand, varies depending on the dose taken.

2. Vacuum pumps

A vacuum pump can keep a man’s erection going for about 30 minutes. According to the NHS, these pumps are “effective,” as 9 out of 10 men can have sex after using them. Using a vacuum pump will cause pain and bruising in less than a third of men. A rubber ring around the base of the penis keeps the blood in place and the penis upright.

3. Surgery

Surgery procedures may be recommended if all other treatment options have been exhausted.

These surgical procedures entail inserting implants, which can be semi-rigid or inflatable, into the penis.

4. Psychological therapies

If erectile dysfunction is caused by stress, anxiety, or other psychological factors, a doctor will recommend that the patient see a psychologist or counselor.

If the condition causes tension and stress in a relationship, it may be recommended that both partners attend the appointments together. This can be useful in resolving any problems.
