The diet of a patient with liver problems must include whole foods, with a low glycemic index. Milk and dairy products should be skimmed. Sweets, foods with high sugar content and fats of animal origin should also be avoided.

Carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta and rice, should preferably be wholemeal, as they contain more soluble fibre, which binds to the sugar and fats in the food cake, making their absorption more difficult.

Reduce your carbohydrate intake

Foods such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes should be consumed in small quantities. Whenever possible, consume the whole-grain version of these foods.

Replace whole milk and dairy products with skimmed milk

Milk and dairy products such as cheese and yoghurts should always have the lowest possible fat content. That is why ricotta and cottage cheese are the most advisable. The other products you consume, always look for the skimmed options.

Avoid fatty foods

Fatty foods, such as red meat, sausages, processed and fried foods should be avoided by people with liver problems. Since it is one of the organs that act in the breakdown and elimination of fat, the more you consume, the more it overloads the liver, worsening the existing problem.

Avoid sweets and foods with a lot of sugar

The excess of glucose (sugar) increases the levels of triglycerides in the blood, aggravating the problems in the liver, in the same way as fats.

Increase your intake of fruit and vegetables

Fruits, vegetables, legumes and vegetables in general are sources of fibre, which hinders the absorption of fats and sugar, aiding digestion and reducing the overload on the liver.

Give preference to foods with a low glycemic index

Sweet potatoes and fruits such as apples and pears release sugar more slowly. This prevents spikes of glucose in the blood which, in excess, is transformed into fat and stored in the liver.

Avoid alcoholic beverages

Alcohol is metabolised by the liver. Alcohol abuse is one of the main causes of fat accumulation in the liver (hepatic steatosis). Furthermore, alcohol is very calorific, having only fewer calories than fats, and is ahead of sugar and proteins when it comes to calories.

Go for mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids

These are the so-called “good fats”, as they protect the heart and blood vessels, and can also help reduce bad cholesterol, helping one of the liver functions, which is cholesterol control. Chestnuts, walnuts, almonds, olive oil, salmon, tuna, sardines, flax seeds and quinoa are some of the foods that contain these fatty acids.

The diet for patients with liver problems must be prepared by a specialist, nutritionist or nutrologist, in accordance with the recommendations of the hepatologist.
