The Red Devils were on the verge of missing out on any European action owing to their dismal league table position in what has been a turbulent season.

It would have been a crushing setback for new United boss Erik ten Hag, who will be aiming to turn the club’s fortunes around when he takes over this summer.

Wolves’ huge defeat means United can finish no worse than eighth, with just one game remaining on the season’s final day, away to Crystal Palace.

United are presently sixth, but West Ham might overtake United on goals scored if they defeat Pep Guardiola’s team on Sunday.

If the Hammers can force United to their worst league position since the 2013-14 season under David Moyes, Ten Hag’s men will participate in the Europa Conference League next season.

The Red Devils’ participation in Europe’s third league would be frustrating for a team with Champions League ambitions.

While the Europa League is not where United wants to be, it provides them with another route into the Champions League the next season and a chance to reclaim the title they won in 2017.

Wolves might yet qualify for the Europa League if they win their remaining games and West Ham loses.

Ten Hag left Ajax with a bang, scoring five goals against Heerenveen to win their 3rd Eredivisie title in 4 years before taking over at United.

One of his primary responsibilities at Old Trafford will be to re-enter United into the Champions League.

United will finish the season with the fewest points in Premier League history, and they have now gone five years without a title.
