Thomas made lots of changes in his lineup and the return of Romelu Lukaku back into the squad was the most obvious one while for Tottenham, they maintained their 3-4-3 under Conte since taking over. At the end of the 90 minutes, it was the home side who got the necessary win as they dispatched their opponent 2-0 on the night.
In the first half of the match, Chelsea was the better team as they quickly pressed and got their reward for that after a mistake from Tanganga at the back saw Alonso pounced onto the ball at Kai Havertz comfortably putting the ball at the back of the net.
The blues would go on to double that lead in the 34th minute this time, through an own goal from one of the Tottenham players. At the end of the first 45 minutes, Chelsea dominated Tottenham who had nothing to offer going forward.
Having secured an important 2-0 win ahead of the semifinal second leg away to Tottenham on February 12, here’s what the Blues need to do in other to secure a place in the final.
1. The changes Thomas Tuchel made and having to use a 4-3-3 formation probably the first time since becoming Chelsea coach, Tuchel can outsmart his counterpart through the likes of Alonso, Kai Havertz particularly in the first half, Ziyech, Saul in the second half and if Chelsea can keep it fresh ahead of the second leg, they are good to go.
2. Chelsea pounced on Tottenham’s defensive error and going into the second leg, of course, Tottenham would want to get a win and with that, Chelsea can pounce on that again through Counter. Here’s where Lukaku would come in.
The clean sheet too would be a major booster ahead of the second leg as it keeps Spurs out ahead of the second leg, Chelsea would be on their way to Wembley to either face Arsenal or Liverpool.
