In a recent interview with Channels TV, Buhari confirmed that he has a favourite candidate in the race but he insisted that he would not reveal the identity of the person because he could be eliminated.
Since then a lot of people have been speculating who Buhari’s secret candidate could be. Some have said it could be Yemi Osinbajo, others have insinuated it could be Goodluck Jonathan. A few others have named Bola Tinubu. But I am of the strong opinion that Tinubu could be Buhari’s anointed candidate.
In this article, I will analyse one plausible reason why Tinubu could be the President’s favourite candidate in the race.
Buhari is indebted to Tinubu for helping him become president in 2015
Buhari’s Presidency may not have been a possible bit for Tinubu. Before Tinubu came up with the idea of forming a mega party called the All Progressives Congress, Buhari had contested the presidential election thrice and failed.
But in 2013, realizing that the People’s Democratic Party could only be defeated by a formidable political party, Tinubu rallied other opposition politicians to come together and form APC, and Buhari was made the Presidential candidate.
That is not all, he also personally provided the lion share of the funds and other resources needed to drive APC to success. So, it is safe to say that without Tinubu, Buhari may not have become a president in 2015.
Tinubu most likely did all of that because he expected Buhari to reciprocate by supporting his presidential ambition in 2023.
Also in the build-up to the 2019 election, there were uncertainties about Buhari’s chances to win re-election. Many people were disillusioned by rising insecurity and economic crisis. The president again turned to Tinubu for help and the former Lagos State Governor delivered.
So there is no doubt Buhari realises that he owes his political success to Tinubu, and there is no better way to pay him back than to support his presidential ambition in 2023.
