Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford did not go according to plan. Granted, Ronaldo scored 24 goals in all competitions for Manchester United, but the Red Devils were completely reliant on him, and they were unable to compete on any level.

After signing with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ronaldo suddenly found himself playing under Ralf Rangnick, and now Erik ten Hag has taken over as manager.

Ronaldo’s illustrious career is coming to an end, and it’s hard to blame him if he wanted to be a part of a more established project.

Ronaldo will always have plenty of suitors, regardless of his age, and there are a few choices that could tempt him into a move this summer.

Paris Saint-Germain

Could we eventually see Cristiano Ronaldo team up with Lionel Messi? Although it would be a decade too late to witness the duo at their peak, it would still be a wonderful sight.

And if the French side go all out for his signature this summer, the fantasy may become a reality. If he leaves Old Trafford, they are the front-runners to sign him.

Furthermore, with only one year left on his contract, Ronaldo’s transfer would not be expensive; it would only his salaries that would cause the Parisians problems.

If the allegations about PSG wishing to sell Neymar are true, his departure would undoubtedly leave a need that could only be filled by one of the finest players in the world.

Could we potentially see a swap deal between United and PSG if we take it a step further? Of course, it’s quite unlikely, but you never know.

Real Madrid

This season, Ronaldo’s comeback to Manchester United has resulted in no titles, but that would not be the case if he returned to Real Madrid.

The Spanish side has just completed the double under Carlo Ancelotti, finishing 13 points ahead of Barcelona in La Liga and then defeating Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League to capture a record 14th European title.

If Ronaldo is looking for additional trophies, Real Madrid is his best option. Furthermore, having just missed out on Kylian Mbappe’s signature, Ronaldo may be able to assist Madristas forget about the Frenchman’s decision to join PSG.

There’s not much more for the Portugal international to achieve after becoming Madrid’s highest goal scorer with 450 goals in 438 games, although another Champions League triumph wouldn’t hurt.

Sporting Lisbon

Ronaldo has already expressed interest in returning to his roots before hanging up his boots, so if he does decide to retire, he might complete his career with Sporting Lisbon.

He joined the Portuguese club in 2002 and rapidly established himself as a first-team regular. They were the first club to offer Ronaldo a chance, and he has never forgotten it.

Financially, it would take some work, as Lisbon is unlikely to be able to match the pay offered by other European powerhouses. If Ronaldo is serious about heading there, he will be willing to take a wage reduction for a season or two.

It’d be a fitting finale to a storied career, and it’d be difficult to make it worse than his return to Manchester United. Don’t dismiss the possibility.

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich is famed for making savvy transfers, with many of their youthful, intelligent acquisitions going on to become European football superstars.

However, with Robert Lewandowski’s exit announced this summer, Julian Nagelsmann’s side is suddenly without an experienced presence in the dressing room.

Ronaldo checks all the requirements as a replacement for Lewandowski, so while it would be a temporary arrangement, the 37-year-old may benefit the team by bringing vital experience and a winning attitude.

It’s a move Bayern would normally avoid, but everyone makes exceptions from time to time, especially when it comes to one of the best players in history.

– Juventus

Despite having spent three seasons in Italy, Ronaldo may believe he has unfinished business in Turin.

He left Juventus last summer with the Italian team just scraping into the Champions League, and he was never able to offer them the European victory they craved.

The Old Lady, on the other hand, are already making moves in the transfer season, with both Angel Di Maria and Paul Pogba on the verge of arriving.

Adding Ronaldo to the mix would be a major statement from Juventus, who must not only win in Europe but also reclaim control of Serie A after two consecutive fourth-place finishes.

– Newcastle United

Newcastle is likely to desire a big signing to jumpstart their new project now that they have the funds to compete with Europe’s best.

The Magpies will not want to wait too long to begin competing, and we all know that investment is unavoidable throughout the summer.

Newcastle should be in the running for Ronaldo if he becomes available. The Tyneside club will put money and wages aside if Ronaldo can assist them reach the next level and qualify for Europe.

The fact that he won’t be able to play in Europe this season is a stumbling barrier in discussions, but money talks, and Newcastle has plenty of it.
