If Chelsea sign Jules Kounde, Reece James could be used as a central defender next season....CONTINUE READING
Blues manager Thomas Tuchel could transfer James to a different position depending on fresh arrivals when the new campaign begins.
Chelsea’s 22-year-old wing-back is widely regarded as one of the best in the world, but he can also play as a central defender in a back three. To be fair, he’s demonstrated he’s capable of doing in the past.
The England international might be deploy to play as a wing-back in order to accommodate Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.
Since the start of the season, Kounde has been linked with a move to Chelsea. He’s usually a center-back, he may more easily transition to full-back in English football.
But according to reports, the deadline for Kounde’s transfer has been set at 5 July.
For the 2018-19 season, moving James to the center back position would be a very dangerous move.
It goes without saying that the Blues academy alum is capable of filling in for a three-man defence. However, the Chelsea team misses him so much when he isn’t wing-backing for them.
James scored six goals and provided 10 assists in 39 appearances for Chelsea last season, so if you move him further back on the pitch, you’re severing a vital link in the attack.
Tuchel’s team appears to be overthinking things, as Kounde prefers to play in the center of defense.
