1. Breast Stimulation; this is one of the things that can cause galactorrhea or lactating before pregnancy or childbirth. Stimulation of the breasts can also cause galactorrhea though in rare cases.
2. Drug Use; certain drugs like marijuana and the likes can cause this disorder in women or young girls. So it is often advised that women or girls who are suffering from this problem inform their doctors or physician that they are drug users, so that adequate treatment can be used to handle the problem. If you are the type of person that’s using drugs, the best thing you can do for yourself is to drop such habit for the sake of your health.
3. Certain medical conditions can also contribute to lactating before pregnancy or childbirth such as;
i. Thyroid issues
ii. Cancer of the hypothalamus or certain problems with this organ.
iii. Kidney or liver related ailments can also cause this problem in women or young girls.
iv. Chronic Stress; this is another health condition that can cause lactation before pregnancy or childbirth. Reason being that when a woman is chronically, stressed, it can interfere with her hormone production.
v. High levels of estrogen can also cause this problem in some women or girls.
4. Certain medications can also cause galactorrhea in women and they include; heart burn medications, birth control pills, anti depressants, antipsychotics, certain painkillers etc. Can all contribute to production of breast milk even before pregnancy or childbirth.
When Should You See A Doctor?
It is very important that you see a doctor once you start lactating even when you are not pregnant. Though it is not totally out of place for fluid to come out of a woman’s breast, excess production of breast milk even with little to no stimulation should be looked into.
