At the end of his current deal this summer, the legendary player from Argentina might become a free agent. He moved to Paris on a free transfer from Barcelona in the summer of 2021, but he struggled to adjust to life there.

In 26 league games for PSG in his first season, he managed to score just six goals despite recording 15 assists. That is a less-than-impressive performance by his standards, especially because, up to that point, he had never scored less than 10 league goals since the 2005-2006 season.

Lionel Messi, 35, has improved this season, scoring 18 goals and dishing out 16 assists in 29 games across all competitions. The former Barcelona forward said the following in a recent interview (h/t @FabrizioRomano):

“With PSG, I feel wonderful. My first year in Paris was quite expensive, but now that I feel good, I have a strong desire to feel at home in both the club and the city. It’s very enjoyable for me. I made a different, enthusiastic start to this season.”

It makes sense that PSG would like to keep Lionel Messi in Paris longer. According to rumours, they made the decision to sell Neymar Jr. so they could pay for any prospective contract extensions for the Argentine player.

“Di Maria says he’ll keep playing, and I’m hoping Leo will too. I have a good physical impression of him because he participated in every World Cup [2022] game. He will show up at the following World Cup, but that is his choice.”

In seven games in Qatar, Messi scored seven goals and provided three assists. When the World Cup is hosted in North America, it is unclear if he will compete in his sixth World Cup. The most ever by a player, he has participated in 26 World Cup games throughout his career.
