HOW CATARACT OCCURS
Cataract usually occurs when the proteins in the eyes begin to form clumps thereby preventing the lens of the eyes from sending clear images to the retina.
It developes slowly and eventually interfers with vision. It can occur in both eyes though they may form at different times.
SYMPTOMS OF CATARACT
– Blurred vision
– Difficulty in seeing at night
– Seeing colours as being faded
– Increase in sensitivity to glare
– Having double vision in the affected eyes
– Frequent change of eye glass due to poor vision.
CAUSES OF CATARACT
– Over production of oxidants
– Smoking
– Ultraviolet Rays
– Long term use of steroids
– Certain ailments such as Diabetes
– Trauma
– Radiation therapy
TYPES OF CATARACT
There are different types of Cataract which includes the following;
– Nuclear cataract
– Cortical cataract
– Posterior capsular cataract
– Congenital cataract, etc.
RISK FACTORS
– Old age
– Heavy alcohol use
– Smoking
– Obesity
– High Blood Pressure
– Family history
– Prolonged exposure to the sun
– Diabetes
– Exposure to radiation due to cancer treatment
DIAGNOSIS
The Doctor performs different tests on the eyes to check for cataract. This includes eye chart to test vision, measurement of the eye pressure, sensitivity to glare and the perception of colour.
TREATMENT OF CATARACT
The Doctor may recommend stronger glasses, magnifying lens or Surgery.
PREVENTION
– Wear sunglasses to protect the eyes from Ultraviolet rays
– Regular eye examination
– Quit smoking
– Consume foods and fruits containing antioxidants
– Maintain healthy weight
Though sometimes Cataract can stop growing on it’s own, the size does not usually reduce and if left untreated, cataract can cause blindness.
