But many do not know what to drink and what not to drink to keep their heart healthy.

Here are the best and worst drinks for your heart.

The best drinks for your heart are:

1. Water: Plain purified water is the best thing to drink for overall health, and that includes your heart.

Everything changes when you are dehydrated. People just don’t function as well. You have less blood circulating through your body when you’re dehydrated.

To make up for this, the heart is strained because it has to beat faster and work harder to pump blood throughout the body.

How much water to drink is going to vary from person to person.

Gauge your need for water by your urine. If it’s clear or pale yellow you’re doing fine, but if it’s dark then you need more.

2. Tea: People have been drinking tea for thousands of years. It’s not just a warm drink for a cold night (or an iced refreshment for a hot day).

Tea is also full of heart-healthy compounds that help fight inflammation and cell damage. Black and green tea are associated with a lower risk of heart attack and stroke, and studies says it’s good for your blood vessel health.

3. Beetroot juice: Beetroot juice is a good choice for your heart. That’s because it’s full of dietary nitrate, the benefits of which are intriguing.

Researchers says nitrate could be used by your body to keep your blood vessels supple and flexible, which keeps your blood pressure low.

Also, beetroot juice can cool down the effects of the sympathetic nervous system, your body’s gas pedal, responsible for the flight-or-fight mechanism.

That’s important because when your body is triggered up, your heart goes into overdrive, beating faster, increasing blood pressure and constricting blood vessels.

Over time, this can lead to hypertension and heart failure.

The worst drinks for your heart are:

4. Carbonated drinks: Soft drinks are really just sugar delivery systems. They’re full of empty calories and can carry a whole day’s worth of added sugar in one bottle. Men who are fond of drinking carbonated drinks regularly had a 20% higher risk of heart attack than men who drink once in a while. A

Also, women who drink more than two bottles a day of carbonated drinks had a 40% greater risk of heart attack than women who rarely drank carbonated drinks.

Furthermore, men who had two or more bottles of carbonated drinks had a 23% greater chance of heart failure than men who drank none.

5. Excess Alcohol: : Moderate alcohol is healthy and protective. The problem is, “moderate” is a lot less than you probably think: 1-2 daily for men, and 1 bottle daily for women.

At most, a man could have one alcoholic beverage maybe three times a week.

For women, it could be two times a week.

That is because too much alcohol brings a whole host of problems, including heart issues like high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, arrhythmia and sudden death.
