Alonso was replaced at half-time on Saturday, with Saul Niguez coming on in his place, which does add some legitimacy to Gissing’s claims.

There are multiple reports that the 31-year-old is keen on moving back to Spain this summer, with Barcelona among his potential suitors, so there is a strong possibility that the defender has put on the blue shirt for the last time.

Alonso is no stranger to fallouts with managers. He was also left out by Frank Lampard after leaving the ground early following his substitution at half-time in a 3-3 draw against West Brom last season.
