The leaders made the plea on Friday in an address during a meeting with Buhari at the Executive Council Chambers, New Government House Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state.

According to the Chairman of Southeast Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Charles Mkpuma, “We plead with you to temper Justice with mercy in the case of our son Nnamdi Kanu.”

Eze Mkpuma informed the president that they have started to have discussion with all aggrieved groups to ensure that the ongoing crisis in the Southeast is settled for peace to return to the region.

The leaders commended the President for construction of second Niger Bridge, Akanu Bbiam Airport and many federal roads in the region and also seek his support for Igbo presidency in 2023.

Kanu was rearrested in June 2021 after he failed to appear in court in 2015 on an 11 count charge bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods, among others.

Kanu was operating from London before his arrest in Kenya then brought down to Nigeria to answer for his “crimes”.

Meanwhile, the agitation of IPOB suffered a setback yesterday as the United Kingdom barred IPOB, the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra and other Biafran groups from participating in its asylum programme.
