The Red Devils have been linked with a lot of high-profile players this summer, but they need to step up their game in the transfer window if they plan on rebuilding the team ahead of next season.

Following what can only be regarded as the club’s worst season ever, Erik ten Hag has come to terms with the fact that he needs to rebuild the team if he hopes to achieve anything next season. Here are four positions Manchester United need to strengthen this summer.

#1. Central midfield

This is perhaps the most urgent position in need of strengthening. Following the departures of Paul Pogba, Matic, and Juan Mata, Manchester United are left feeling light in midfield. The only first-team midfielders left at the club are Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek, McTominay, and Fred. In truth, these midfielders, except for Bruno Fernandes, aren’t very reliable.

Erik ten Hag has decided to make signing a midfielder his priority this summer, and that is a step in the right direction. Manchester United are ‘aggressively’ pursuing Frankie de Jong this summer, and The Red Devils are increasingly confident they can land his signature.

#2. Centre-forward

Manchester United need a centre-forward almost as urgently as they need a central midfielder. Manchester United do not have many options in the centre-forward position following the departure of Edinson Cavani. Rashford is very unreliable, and it would be very ‘risky’ for the club to rely on only 37-year-old Ronaldo to provide the goals next season.

Manchester United need to strengthen the centre-forward position by signing a striker as soon as possible. According to The Evening Standard, the club have reportedly given up in their attempts to sign Darwin Nunez this summer. However, there are other alternatives out there for them to look into.

#3. Right-back

This is another position Manchester United need to strengthen ahead of next season. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been disappointing of late. There is also the possibility that he could leave the club this summer. Manchester United should sign a new right-back to provide cover for Diogo Dalot.

#4 Left-wing

Manchester United seriously lack depth in the left-wing position. For this reason, Rashford is often deployed as a make-do left-winger. This could be one of the reasons he performed so poorly last season. Man United need to sign a wide man so Rashford can be used more often in his natural centre-forward position.
