Before Qatar 2022, Ronaldo was level with three other players for the record of most tournaments scored in. Pelé (Brazil, 1958–1970), Uwe Seeler (West Germany, 1958–1970) and Miroslav Klose (Germany, 2002–2014) had also scored in four tournaments.
Lionel Messi had also entered the club of players to have scored in four editions with his goal in Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia earlier this week.
Ronaldo scored one goal in six games in his first World Cup in 2006, one in four games in 2010, one in three in 2014 and four goals in four games, including a memorable hat-trick against Spain, in 2018. Messi has a total of 7 World Cup goals in 20 games. He had failed to score in 2010.
Ronaldo now has eight goals from 18 World Cup games and is just one short of Eusebio’s record of nine World Cup goals for Portugal (all in 1966).
Ronaldo already holds the records for most international goals (now 118) and most Euros goals (14). The record for most World Cup goals is held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose with 16.
