Despite the presence of Lionel Messi, Argentina has experienced significant grief in recent years. In 2014, Argentina did make it to the championship game, but they lost to Germany in overtime, 1-0.

Despite having the unpredictable Lionel Messi leading the assault, Argentina was unable to force extra time or penalties. There was much ado about Messi, but it was another great player who scored the game-winning goal with his left foot.

The South American team’s previous World Cup final appearance ended in a 1-0 loss to Germany in Italia ’90. Two Argentine players were sent off that night in Rome as the Albiceleste lost.

Without scoring a single goal, Maradona didn’t leave quite the same impression on the tournament as he had four years earlier, but he still led his side to the World Cup final.
