The following steps should be taken if your car brakes fail while you are moving quickly.
1. Make an effort to keep your composure and drive safely.
We realize it’s not easy, but you need to keep as much of your cool as you can in this situation. Take a few deep breaths to calm yourself, and keep your eyes on the road.
Don’t freak out. Remind yourself that you do have choices and that you may take action to increase your chances of a favorable outcome whenever you feel overwhelmed or afraid.
2. You might try pressing the brakes harder.
Pumping the brake pedal repeatedly can restore your car’s brakes. By increasing brake pressure in this manner, you might be able to safely slow the car down. Remember that there is no guarantee that this will work, especially if the brake failure was caused by a technical issue or the complete loss of braking fluid.
3. Shift it into a second.
If your car has a manual gearbox, going into a lower gear can assist you to lower down. This will be very beneficial to you if you are moving downward. Keep in mind that this might not work as well if you’re driving on a flat or inclined surface.
4. Engage the emergency brake if necessary.
Most cars feature an emergency brake or parking brake as a backup device in case the main braking system fails unexpectedly. The emergency brake can be engaged by either pulling up on the brake lever or depressing the brake pedal, depending on how your vehicle is configured.
Hopefully, you’ll be able to use this to either stop the car or at least slow it down. Keep in mind that using the emergency brake at a fast speed can make the car slide or perhaps lose control.
5. Pick a secure spot to pull over.
If you can’t slow the car down using the previous methods, your best choice is to look for a safe place to halt. The car needs to be stopped in a secure location, which could be on the side of the road, in a parking lot, or somewhere else.
On a freeway or other busy road, move as far to the right as you can, then flash your hazard lights to alert other drivers to your situation.
6. Please halt the engine.
If you are in a safe location and are unable to stop the car, you should turn off the engine. If you do this, the likelihood of a fire or other disaster will be reduced. Switch off the vehicle’s engine and stay inside until help arrives.
7. Place a call for help.
In that case, you ought to call for help if you can’t stop the car or move it to a safe location. Call your local emergency number or 911 and provide as much detail as you can about your location and the situation.
