The Portugal winger, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the first and only player in history to win the Ballon d’Or award as the World’s Player of the Year without winning a single trophy in 2013.

The award, which was given out in Zurich on January 13, 2014, was his second Ballon d’Or, after winning the award in 2008 at the age of 23. The win ended Lionel Messi’s domination of the award.

The 37-year-old won the accolade after a historic extension of the voting that saw him overtake Ribery who was earlier ahead of him in the voting chart.

During the year under review, the Portuguese international was playing in Spain for Real Madrid. Real Madrid was trophyless that year, losing to Atlético Madrid 4-3 on aggregate in the semifinals of the 2012/2013 Champions League as well as also losing the 2013 Copa del Rey final to Atlético Madrid 2-1.

Overall, Cristiano Ronaldo has won a total of 32 trophies in his career, with 5 Ballon d’Ors. He is one of the few players who have made over 1,100 professional career appearances.
