The ultimate objective of Manchester City remains to win the Champions League.

However, this dream has eluded the club since 2008, when their takeover was initiated.

The club has yet to replicate the same level of dominance in Europe despite becoming the undisputed most successful team in English football for over a decade.

In recent years, particularly under Pep Guardiola, the Sky Blues have endured some puzzling eliminations from competition.

In the knockout rounds, losses to AS Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur, and Lyon immediately come to mind.

Nevertheless, the Catalan and his team appear to be a force to be reckoned with in Europe’s elite competition, as evidenced by their two most recent campaigns.

During the 2020/21 season, the Premier League champions reached their first Champions League final, defeating Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain along the way.

However, Manchester City lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the all-English championship match.

Riyad Mahrez increased the team’s lead to two goals in the closing moments of the second leg of the semi-final against Real Madrid, and it appeared that City would face Liverpool in the final.

However, a late comeback inspired by Rodrygo decided the match in favor of eventual champions Real Madrid.

As Pep Guardiola’s squad aims to finally conquer Europe this season, club legend Yaya Touré commented on his former club’s chances of finally claiming the competition.

Speaking during the Champions League draw in Istanbul on Thursday, Toure said: “Every year they have a chance, and this year they’re going to have a chance. They can get what they need. It’s not going to be easy for them, but I wish them good luck.”

The English powerhouses have been placed in Group G with Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, and FC Copenhagen.

In what is considered to be one of the toughest groups in the tournament thus far, City must first secure qualification before they can even consider becoming European Champions.
