Rooney and Neville, former Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammates at Manchester United, have been vocal in criticising the 37-year-old in recent weeks, especially after the Portugal captain fell out with the Red Devils.

Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot to give Portugal the lead in their World Cup opener against Ghana on Thursday and Fernandes backed the 37-year-old to thrive at the tournament and put the Old Trafford drama behind him.

Fernandes, who provided two assists during the 3-2 win over the West Africans, said his former Manchester United teammate likes “to work under that criticism from everyone.”

“So I pray all of you to keep doing that because he gets the best of himself when you guys do that,” Fernandes said after Portugal’s opening win in Group H.

The midfielder said the aim is for the team to do well in Qatar, adding that he would work hard to make Cristiano Ronaldo and supporters of his country happy.
