A number of big-name forwards have been dropped, as is customary before any major tournament.

Here are three veteran attackers who were left out of their countries’ World Cup squads.

1. Ivan Toney (England):

Ivan Toney of Brentford was left out of England’s 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. England manager Gareth Southgate ignored the 26-year-old star, preferring other strikers.

Toney has performed admirably for Brentford since the club’s promotion to the Premier League last season. The former Newcastle United man is the driving force behind Brentford’s league-leading performance.

2. Moussa Diaby (France):

Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen is one player whose exclusion from France’s squad for the FIFA World Cup may surprise many. France manager Didier Deschamps ignored the 23-year-old wing wizard in his selection for the tournament.

Diaby progressed through the ranks at PSG before joining Bayer Leverkusen in search of regular playing time in 2019.

3. Firmino (Brazil):

Because of his pedigree, Roberto Firmino’s exclusion from the Brazil squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup was surprising. In recent years, the Liverpool star has been a regular for Selecao, particularly since joining the Premier League club.

Despite the addition of Darwin Nunez as competition, Firmino has had a strong season for Liverpool.
