Speaking during an interview on Spice FM, MOA Chief Executive Officer Patricia Mutheu proposed the red listing of drivers for every traffic offence they commit.
She explained that the red-listing would help the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) decide whether they can renew one’s Driving Licence (DL).
“For every flout of the traffic rules, the driver’s licence should be put on the red list. That will make it very difficult for them to renew their licence when the time comes.
“That will make them responsible,” she expounded. However, the CEO opined that the system would only work efficiently if the penalty system was automated with the help of cameras on the road.
She expressed her support for the instant fines that Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen proposed to be implemented on the roads.
However, she noted that the fines need to be affordable for Kenyans to mitigate any attempts at corruption by stakeholders.
Further, Mutheu called on the government to also have a policy that will encourage continuous learning of Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers.
On its part, NTSA revealed that it would be reviewing its policies using some of the trends that have been unearthed in the latest crackdown.
Among the trends that have been identified so far include underlying health issues of drivers in addition to mental health illnesses.
The recent proposals and initiatives come amidst increased cases of road accidents in the country. Since the beginning of the year, over 1,213 Kenyans have died in road accidents with the majority of those who have been affected being pedestrians..<<CONTINUE READING>>
