There are some diseases that become more common as we age. However, getting older does not automatically mean poor health and that is why there are healthy lifestyle habits you can engage in to stay healthy even at old age.

Plenty of older adults enjoy vigorous health, often better than many younger people. Preventive measures like healthy eating, exercising, and managing stress, avoiding vices like alcohol abuse and smoking can keep you healthy even at old age.

Aging well means taking care of both the body and the mind. It encompasses adopting the right lifestyle habits and eliminating the ones that are harmful. Some of the right lifestyle habits you need to adopt once you start aging include;

1. Healthy diet

Healthy diet is very important if you want to age well. Once you start aging, consume more fruits and vegetables. Different protein choices with more fish, beans and pea are important.

Consume more servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy (milk, yogurt or cheese) that are fortified with vitamin D to help keep your bones healthy. Avoid foods that are high in saturated fat for the sake of your heart.

2. Exercise

Exercise is very important to your health especially as you age. Maintaining regular physical activity can help prevent many common diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Exercise improves overall immune function, which is important for seniors as their immune systems are often compromised. Even if you cannot engage in vigorouse exercise, mild ones like walking and jogging are very important.

3. Avoiding stress

As you age, your body will begin to demand more rest hence make sure you find time out of your busy schedule to rest. Elevated levels of cortisol in aging are associated with higher levels of psychosocial stress, poorer cognitive performance, and atrophy of memory-related structures in the brain such as the hippocampus. Stress can also cause premature aging hence avoid it.
