He added that the road would later be extended to Eldoret and possibly to Malaba. Ruto explained that the construction of the road was necessary given that the government wanted to make Nakuru County an attractive hub for investors.

“We are well on course to dualling the Nairobi – Nakuru Highway. Before the end of this year, we will begin the dualling of the road between Nairobi and Nakuru all the way to Eldoret and possibly to Malaba,” he announced.

The dualing of the road is set to ease the traffic typically experienced on the road that leads to snarl-ups during especially during the festive season.

The highway is mostly used by Kenyans heading to Nakuru and Western Kenya. Huge trucks which transport goods from the port of Mombasa to neighbouring countries such as Uganda also use the road.

Notably, according to the 2023-2027 strategic plan by the Kenya Highways Authority (KeNHA), this specific highway was listed as a priority for the country’s development goals.

According to the plan, the road network from Mombasa-Nairobi-Busia will be dualed. The estimated cost of the project is Ksh35 billion (Rironi – Nakuru – Mau Summit) and Ksh25 billion for the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
