The historic encounter marked Luton’s return to hosting top-flight football after nearly three decades.

The early minutes saw both teams pushing for dominance.

Luton’s Ross Barkley had an early opportunity, but his volley veered wide of the target.

West Ham finally broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Lucas Paqueta found Jarrod Bowen, who netted a close-range header.

Luton didn’t back down, with Elijah Adebayo and Ryan Giles coming close to equalizing.

The game took a dramatic turn when West Ham appeared to double their lead through Emerson, only for VAR to disallow the goal for offside.

Luton, spurred on by their passionate supporters, relentlessly sought an equalizer but were foiled by resolute defending.

The decisive moment came in the 86th minute as James Ward-Prowse’s corner met the head of Kurt Zouma, who powered it into the net, securing West Ham’s lead.

Luton managed to pull one back in stoppage time, courtesy of Carlton Morris, but it was too late to deny West Ham their moment at the summit of the Premier League.
