The first ended in a goalless draw between Brentford and Chelsea, with neither team able to find the back of the net. While the hosts had the majority of possession, they struggled to create many clear-cut chances and were often wasteful in front of goal.
Brentford, on the other hand, sat back and defended deep, but were dangerous on the counter-attack. Both teams missed good opportunities, with Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Raheem Sterling coming close to breaking the deadlock. Noni Madueke also hit the post in the opening minutes.
Chelsea started the second half on the front foot, but it was the visitors who took broke the deadlock in the 58th minutes through Ethan Pinnock.
Bryan Mbeumo delivered a perfect cross into the box and Pinnock rose above the Chelsea defenders to head the ball into the back of the net.
Chelsea desperately searched for an equalizer and despite bringing on some fresh attacking options, Chelsea were unable to find the back of the net. They pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but the Brentford defense stood firm and continued to repel all of the visitors’ attacks.
