What Parts Of The Body Can Be Affected By Pneumonia?

1. The Lungs and respiratory system

The lungs and respiratory system are parts of the body that can be affected by pneumonia. When you have a pneumonia infection, it will cause an inflammation and build up of fluid in your lungs thereby causing respiratory problems such as breathing difficulty and chest pain. When left untreated for a long period of time, this will result to lungs failure.

2. The Heart and circulatory system

When you have pneumonia, the bacteria will invade your heart thereby increasing your risk of developing a cardiovascular disease such as heart failure. Pneumonia will prevent the effective circulation of blood to your heart and body.

Pneumonia can also affect your brain cells by causing pneumoccocal meningitis. This is an inflammation caused by lack of oxygen in the blood flowing to the brain. When left untreated, it can result to mental confusion and loss of memory, which is usually common in older adults who are above 65.
