On February 29, Subira Kanini Kavambo’s life was turned upside down when she lost her daughter to a fellow passenger in a matatu.

The 24-year-old mother was travelling from Nairobi to Ukambani when a series of events led to the disappearance of her baby.

Subira’s harrowing ordeal started when she boarded a Country Bus Station matatu heading to Mutitu wa Ndoooa via
Mwingi – Kitui. In an interview with KTN News, the distressed mother recalled sitting beside a woman who initiated a conversation.

The two strangers soon became friends to the extent that she agreed to let the seatmate hold her seven-month-old daughter Briana Mukinu. Unbeknownst to her, the “new friend” was setting herself up for a heist that would leave the young mother reeling in pain.

Things took a different turn when they got to Makongeni, and Subira started feeling dizzy and dozed off without notice. When she awoke from the slumber, the vehicle was in Matuu, but her seatmate and the baby were missing.
Fellow passengers revealed that

the suspected thief alighted from the matatu with the baby at the Magogoni area on the Thika Garissa Highway. Subira says she filed the missing child report at Maguguni and Matuu police stations, but little has come in the way of finding the baby.
