His transfer has seemingly been totally stuck for some time. Towards the end of the season and through the start of the window the links to Catalonia were heavy, but there’s been no action and almost no whispers at all about progress on the deal.

Perhaps that’s natural, given Chelsea’s struggles to buy players, but it seems that once Marc Cucurella or another defender is signed, progress can be made on the sale of Alonso.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly met with Barcelona executives weeks ago, and it seems likely that terms for many of these deals will have been worked out then, with both parties just waiting for other pieces to fall into place before they pull the trigger.

Once one defender domino falls, Alonso could be next.
