Manchester United could turn to Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann in the January transfer window, although any move may hinge on Cristiano Ronaldo’s future according to journalist Pete O’Rourke....CONTINUE READING

The France international has been the centre of a bizarre turn of events at the Wanda Metropolitano this season, with Atletico reluctant to start him in games in an attempt to avoid paying Barcelona a previously agreed fee.

That has led to suggestions the forward could be on the move sooner rather than later, and given United’s previous links to him, it comes as no surprise that Erik ten Hag’s side are being mentioned in that conversation.

While O’Rourke suggested Griezmann could potentially become a target in January, he did hint that a potential move for the forward could depend on what happens with Ronaldo.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: “We don’t know what’s going to happen with Ronaldo, is he going to stay or go in January? I think if something like that was to happen, then Ten Hag would like to bring another forward in.

“I’m sure Griezmann, with his CV and calibre, and potential availability, could be a live target in January.”

Griezmann of course originally left Atletico to join Barcelona in a whopping £103m deal back in 2019 after his full release clause was paid, but things have since turned sour for the Frenchman.

Ten Hag must steer clear of Griezmann at Man Utd

Given his exploits at both domestic and international level, it’s no surprise if Griezmann’s name being linked with the club excites a lot of United fans.

Indeed, former United midfielder Luke Chadwick has previously voiced his backing for a move for the forward, declaring: “Griezmann is a world-class player, he’s won the World Cup and been a pivotal part of the team that won that.

“He’s someone who could also be on Bruno Fernandes’ wavelength too, with his movement and ability to score goals. If someone like Griezmann comes in and is available you’d hope they’d consider him as he could really add something to the squad.”

But given what Ten Hag is trying to build at Old Trafford in terms of a team based on his identity and away from the individualism that has plagued the Red Devils over the years, a move for Griezmann seems contrary to that.

United have simply looked better off without a marquee forward leading the line in recent weeks, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to the bench coinciding with the Manchester club picking up notable victories against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

Bringing in another big-reputation player on big wages just seems to be a recipe for disaster, especially at a time when the club appeared to have turned things around.

It’s a move Ten Hag must surely avoid making in January.
