The Red Devils want to allow De Gea leave Old Trafford on a free transfer as the 31-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season.

De Gea is Manchester United’s second-highest earner behind Cristiano Ronaldo, earning a basic salary of around £350,000-a-week.

The Spain international’s performances have not reflected his status as one of the highest earners in world football.

The Spain first-choice goalie has not started the season convincingly under Erik ten Hag, conceding two embarrassing goals in Man United’s first game of the seaaon.

His inability to play out from the back has been a major issue under ten Hag as the Red Devils had to ditch the style since defeats to Brentford and Brighton.

And for the Dutchman to play his brand of football, he needs a goalkeeper that is good with his feet to beat the opponents’ press.

For this reason, Manchester United are now in the market in search of a new goalkeeper, and the Telegraph says the club are now interested in Everton ace Pickford.

The England international is one of the best in the league with his feet, though there remain question marks over his handling and temperament.

But De Gea’s wages are another reason that the club are questioning his future after figures released this week showed the club have the highest wage bill in the Premier League.
