The 21-year-old endured a disappointing 2021/22 campaign. He struggled with constant fitness issues and managed to grab himself just 10 Premier League starts.

However, Jones will view Liverpool’s decision not to sign a new midfielder this summer as the perfect opportunity to cement his place on Merseyside.

At 21-year-of-age, this season could be make or break for the English midfielder.

To date, he has scored just 3 Premier League goals in a Liverpool shirt. Goals are exactly what Liverpool’s midfield is missing, and Jones could place a bit more of guarantee on his Liverpool future if he adds a few more to his game.

Jones will also be aware of transfer rumours suggesting Liverpool will be making a move for Jude Bellingham next summer.

If the Reds do sign Bellingham and Jones has another poor season, the midfielder could be rendered surplus to requirements at Anfield next summer.

And at this current moment of time, a starting place for Jones isn’t guaranteed either. The likes of Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, and Harvey Elliot tend to start ahead of him.

Jürgen Klopp demands high intensity football from his engine room players, meaning rotation is a necessity. Thus, opportunities will once again arise for Jones next season, but he needs to offer more.

Jones should be setting himself the objective of becoming a regular starter at Anfield this campaign.

He’s had a few seasons to bed himself into the Liverpool first team dressing room, and it’s time for him to take his game up a level.

The same applies to many others in the Liverpool midfield. Keita has failed to meet the lofty expectations many a Reds fan placed upon him when he joined the club in 2018.

Meanwhile, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has failed to re-discover his pre-injury form since his return last season.

There are opportunities to be taken in the Liverpool midfield.

A new signing in that area isn’t being made, and one of Klopp’s midfielders should be looking to establish himself as first choice alongside Fabinho and Thiago
