At the National Employers Consultative Association’s (NECA) 2nd National Labour Adjudication and Arbitration Forum in Abuja yesterday, Ajaero made this declaration.
“No matter what amount you negotiate in the present Nigerian economy, in the next five years, it can’t buy a bag of rice,” stated the President of the NLC, speaking about the impact of galloping inflation on the earnings of Nigerian workers.
The statute allowing for five yearly renegotiations of the national minimum wage needs to be tweaked in order to allow for an annual adjustment of salaries depending on the rate of inflation and the value of the naira.
“People have been saying that raising salaries will impact inflation, so is it better to maintain salary stagnation while other factors keep rising?” This is a significant issue.
According to Daily post, Ajaero added that no one is paying the N35,000 that was agreed upon a year ago, expressing the workers’ dissatisfaction with the government’s inadequate wage award execution.
As of yesterday, he claims that federal government employees still had not received their January salary.
Ajaero questioned why, eight months after the President removed the fuel subsidy, he could not decide on how to mitigate its effects in less than twenty-four hours.
“You said the gasoline subsidy was gone in less than a day, and it’s taking you almost eight months to decide what to do with it. You’re asking us to give you more time.
The removal of fuel subsidies took place in a day, but more than eight months later, not a single CNG bus is operating,” the speaker stated…CONTINUE READING>>
