There certainly have been a number of memorable Copa del Rey finals in the history of the competition. But one that stands out was the 1979-80 final because it was an event that majority of football fans never expected.

The 1979-80 Copa del Rey final was an all Real Madrid affair. It was played between Real Madrid and their reserve team on 4 June 1980 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Eighteen youth teams participated but none of them were actually considered serious contenders. Surprisingly, Real Madrid’s reserve side defeated a number of senior teams including 23-time winners Athletic Bilbao, to reach the final where they lost 6-1 to the senior team.

Juanito scored twice for Real Madrid while Santillana, Andrés Sabido, Vicente del Bosque and Francisco García Hernández scored a goal each. Ricardo Álvarez scored the only goal for the reserve team. Both teams celebrated with the trophy after the match.
