According to Wikipedia, the first game was played in 1881, when United ran home 3-0 winners against City; however, the tide has shifted to Manchester City in recent times as Pep Guardiola’s men have the upper hand against their United rivals.

The Manchester derby has been played 164 times, with Manchester United winning 64 times and Manchester City winning 52 times. However, with both teams being in form in the second half of the season, the next Manchester Derby might not be an easy ride for either.

Here are the Manchester Derby matches that produced the most goals.

​1. Manchester City 6-1 Manchester United 2011/2012 season

City recorded their biggest Manchester derby win against United since 1955 when they beat United at Old Trafford 6-1 to wrap up a one-team showing at Old Trafford.

Balotelli opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of the game. Balotelli doubled the scoring in the 60th minute before Aguero made it 3-0 shortly after Balotelli’s double. United was able to grab 1 goal through Darren Fletcher, however, after that one consolation goal, City took over the match.

Edin Dzeko’s double and David Silva’s goal made it 6-1 in the game, showing the total dominance of the Citizens at the Etihad.

2. Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United 2022/2023 season

United was totally blown away by City at the Etihad in the 2022/23 EPL season. Two hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden were enough to see off City’s rivals, who were on a good run of form under new coach Erik Ten Hag.

City were already 4-0 up in the first half as Phil Foden and Erling Haaland scored two goals each in the first half of the encounter.

Antony struck in the 56th minute to give United a goal; however, both Foden and Haaland scored later to complete their hat-tricks in the second half.

Martial’s brace in the final minutes of the second half enabled United to score two goals late in the game.

3. Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City 2009/2010 season

The game was evenly contested by both teams; however, United came out as the winner of this encounter. Rooney opened the scoring in the 2nd minute; however, Gareth Barry equalized to make it 1-1 in the 16th minute of the game.

A brace from Darren Fletcher was thought to have won the game, but Craig Bellamy’s second goal of the game in the 90th minute drew the match 3-3. However, United won in stoppage time through Owen to secure their fifth win in five games of the 2009/2010 EPL season.

4. Manchester United 4-2 Manchester City 2014/2015 season

Ashley Young who was in top form in that game, had his cross met by Fellaini, who made it 2-1. Juan Mata made it 3-1 to United in the 67th minute, and Smalling rounded off the scoring in the 73rd minute for the hosts. Sergio Aguero grabbed his second in the 89th minute, but it was not enough to see a comeback from City.

5. Manchester City 5-1 Manchester United 1989/1990 season

Back in 1989 newly promoted Man City demolished Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man United 5-1. David Oldfield bagged a brace for City with Morley, Bishop and Hinchcliffe netting the others, goal of the match was a spectacular scissor kick scored by United’s Mark Hughes.

Mark Hughes could only manage a consolation goal as City defeated United 5-1 in the 1989-1990 Manchester derby, thanks to a brace from David Oldfield and goals from Trevor Morley, Ian Bishop, and Andy Hinchcliffe.
