Merson, who described Manchester United as the biggest club in the world and acknowledged how difficult it is for players to leave such a club, however, said the England international must realise he no longer has a future there.

Maguire started only eight games in the Premier League for Manchester United this season.

He could leave Old Trafford this summer after slipping down Erik ten Hag’s pecking order.

Merson told Premier League Production, “It’s hard, he’s at the biggest club in the world in my opinion.

“I know they’re not performing like the biggest club in the world but they’re a huge club and he’s there, so wherever he goes from here is going to be a downgrade.

“It’s probably hard for him to leave, but he has to leave.

“I don’t know, I don’t know who’s going to take him. If he’s 40 or £50 million he won’t [have a lot of suitors].”
