Upon release, Njenga reunited with his wife outside Embu Prisons, accompanied by a clergyman who led them in renewing their vows.

There was a moment of joy and celebration at the Embu. Prisons after a man who has been behind bars for 17 years finally tasted freedom for the first time in nearly two decades.

Joseph Njenga was arrested and imprisoned in 2007 over robbery with violence after he was found in possession of stolen property.

Speaking to Inooro TV, the former inmate who left the heavily guarded prison explained that though he was caught in possession of the stolen vehicle, he did not participate in the stealing.

He blamed his misfortune on the wrong circle of friends he was involved in. Now, 17 years later, Njenga is ready to start a new life after finishing his sentence.

As soon as he walked out the gate, he found his wife waiting for him with open arms. The couple locked each other in a long and warm embrace after years of not being with one another

Njenga’s wife was in the company of a man of God who prayed for them as they renewed their vows to each other just outside the prison.

The woman, Joyce Njenga, said her faith in God kept her faithful to her husband for all those years. The couple is now set to start their new life in Nyandarua County.
