The kidneys are two of the most vital organs in the body, responsible for filtering out waste and toxins in the form of urine. They are located just below the rib cage, on each side of the spine.

It is important to take care of these organs, especially in the winter months, when one becomes susceptible to seasonal illnesses and/or is already suffering from a kidney disease.

Dr Puneet Bhuwania, consultant nephrologist and transplant physician at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road listed some important tips for maintaining the overall health of these bean-shaped organs. Read on.

2 Food

Dealing with kidney disease can be challenging, but maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for managing the condition and promoting overall well-being, said Dr Bhuwania. He added that incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into the diet can help balance potassium and other mineral levels while providing valuable vitamins and antioxidants.

“Opting for low-sodium or salt-free seasonings like herbs, spices, and lemon juice can add flavour to meals without contributing to water retention.

Whole grains like quinoa or brown rice are good sources of fibre and nutrients that support digestive health without adding strain on the kidneys.

3 Yoga

According to the doctor, yoga is beneficial for people dealing with kidney disease, offering a range of physical and mental benefits. Breathing exercises in yoga improve circulation, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being for those with compromised kidney function.

“Meditation is an integral component of yoga practice, providing emotional support for those navigating the challenges of kidney disease. Do yoga under the guidance of a certified practitioner.”

4 Exercise

The nephrologist said that regular exercise is beneficial. Not only does it help improve cardiovascular health and overall strength, but it also controls blood pressure and manages weight, vital for kidney health. “Not all forms of exercise may be suitable for those with kidney disease.

Low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, or gentle yoga are recommended to minimise stress on the kidneys. By engaging in regular physical activity, individuals dealing with kidney disease can experience improved mood, reduced stress levels, and an overall enhanced quality of life,” he stated.

5 Symptoms

Kidney disease goes unnoticed until symptoms become severe, the doctor cautioned. The early signs such as fatigue, nausea and swelling in the feet and ankles may be mistaken for other common ailments.

“Changes in urinary habits like increased or decreased frequency, presence of blood in the urine, or foamy urine should not be overlooked. Symptoms like itchy skin, loss of appetite, muscle cramps or twitches can be linked to declining kidney function.”

6 Treatment

Medications are prescribed to control high blood pressure and protect kidneys from further damage. Dietary changes, including reduced sodium and protein intake, may be recommended to lessen the burden on the kidneys. For patients with advanced kidney disease, dialysis or a kidney transplant may be recommended.

7 Winter Care Tips

“One key tip for patients is to stay warm by dressing in layers and keeping their homes at a comfortable temperature; extreme cold can increase blood pressure and strain the kidneys.
