Before the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal Capital Territory was attacked severally by the Boko Haram terrorists. in 2014, Boko Haram declared a Caliphate in Gwoza after capturing Bama and Gamboru as well as other towns and villages in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa. They installed their traditional heads and collected taxes in some areas. They also hosted their flags in some communities. The advent of the administration of Muhammadu Buhari did not stop Boko Haram from existing, however, it stopped the attacks on the Federal Capital Territory and prevented the terrorists from completely taking over communities in the country.
Although Banditry, kidnapping, and secessionist agitations became rampant during the administration of President Muhammadu, he has provided the Nigerian security forces with huge arms and ammunition to fight crime in the country. The police, military, and other security agencies have constantly been receiving some arms and ammunition they need to tackle insecurity. For example, just last week, President Buhari commissioned some naval boats and ships for the Nigerian navy as he works towards improving Nigeria’s maritime security.
Although things are not perfect, Buhari’s ability to prevent Boko Haram from attacking the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is a major achievement because when the capital city of a country becomes prone to terrorist attacks, it can be seen as an insult to the nation. After all, the capital territory should be the most fortified city in the country. Buhari’s resolve to continuously supply the Nigerian security agencies with enough weapons such as the Super Tucano fighter jets, ships, and other sophisticated weaponry are some of the reasons why insurgency has reduced to some extent since he took over in 2015.
